According to Sporting News in their Apr. 8 report, golf star Tiger Woods will miss the Masters Tournament, making it his first-ever absence at Augusta during his famous career. Other stars will participate including Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott. In particular, Mickelson recently told the media how strange it is without Tiger as part of this major tournament in professional golf.
"It's a weird feeling not having him here, isn't it?" Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, said. "He's been such a mainstay in professional golf and in the majors. It's awkward to not have him here. I hope he gets back soon. I hope he's back for the other majors. As much as I want to win — and I know how great he is and tough to beat — it makes it special when he's in the field and you're able to win."
Without Tiger, it may open up the field of competition that much more for a new winner. However, there will be several former winners competing from the last ten years including Bubba Watson, Zach Johnson, Angel Cabrera and of course three-time winner Mickleson. Adam Scott of Australia is the 2013 champion, with Watson winning for the U.S. in 2012. Some believe that Mickelson is a "master" of this tournament, and his multiple wins in the past decade or so definitely show that.
Scott, McIlroy and Mickelson lead the odds as favorites to win this year’s US Masters at Augusta, Georgia. Scott and McIlroy are each 10/1 favorites with Mickelson at 12/1. Rounding out the top five favorites are Jason Day at 14/1 and Sergio Garcia at 16/1. Golf fans who want to catch them in action will likely want to check out the Masters.com website since TV coverage starts after their tee times Thursday.
